Cantagalo Pavão-Pavãozinho

Utilizing our strong ties to neighbouring communities in Rio de Janeiro, Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho, we focus on supporting the families and the individuals of these communities by offering a range of educational and innovative activities that give them the best chance at achieving a fruitful future.

Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho are located in Rio de Janeiro’s southern area between Ipanema and Leblon districts. The history of these communities in Rio de Janeiro goes back to 1908 when the first wooden shacks were built on the hill. The community was started by former slaves, miners, and northeastern Brazilians migrating into Rio de Janeiro in hopes of better lives and more possibilities for work. With 34% of Brazil’s population living below the poverty line, favelas are evidence of the social inequalities plaguing the country. Today these communities in Rio de Janeiro have a Police Peacekeeping Unit, a metro station and approximately 20,000 inhabitants.

Other sister programs that we run such as Caminhos in Action and The Caminhos Language Centre also provide opportunities to get involved with Mais Caminhos and the Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho communities in Rio de Janeiro.
